4.4 exhaust on 3.0?

Hi all,

I've been reading up on how folks swap the 4.6 or 4.8 exhaust onto their 4.4 or 3.0, but in my searching I haven't found a solid answer about whether the regular 4.4 exhaust provides any upgrade to a 3.0. I know they have quad tips, but other than that are the mufflers any different?

I know I'm not going to get any real power, but I would love to hear the M54 a little more. This is a family car so I don't want to make it super loud, but its also my DD and I'd love to get a little more sound since it's such a great sounding motor. I'm temporarily lacking racecar

I've considered the AFE intake as a sound upgrade as well but at $365 it's just too overpriced... Same goes for any aftermarket muffler system. My other option would be the X-pipe upgrade, which I might end up doing if there's no bolt-on option. But there are tons and tons of junked E53s in local junkyards so I could get the V8 mufflers easy and cheap.

Thank you and sorry if I missed the answer in searching!

Other than looks, you won't hear much from the inside of the cabin. I have Remus on mine and it's not very audible inside - sounds great outside the car, but very muted inside. But if you can find a pair for dirt cheap, I would do it just to get rid of that droopy OE pipes

Oh, the V8 quad tips are not angled down. I wasn't sure what you meant by droopy pipes, but now I get it. So only the 3.0 tips are angled down... I wonder why? I thought that was an odd style choice.

Have you considered Golf tee mod / exhaust flapper disable mod? Might be available for E53s?

The stock 4.4 exhaust is really quiet, dunno why you'd want that. Try a different muffler, that might give you a bit more volume while still keeping things civil.

I don't want to have a straight pipe sound, I just want to hear the motor a little more since it sounds so great already.

Maybe I will just have to do the X-pipe modification to remove the resonator.
