No, You must remove the exhaust, it's in the way of the driveshaft which needs to be lowered at the center bearing to unhook from the transfer case. Exhaust very easy to do and comes down in one piece. Hardest part are the header nuts which may strip out. You'll need a very hot torch. If the bolts break, or they strip, BMW usually stocks them. The old ones are pressed in, new ones are not.
The t-case is an easy job. unbolt the driveshafts, disconnect wiring, unbolt, and pull off. |

Just an FYI. I had a clinking (tingy spring type noise) when engaging forward or reverse. I serviced both the front and rear driveshafts and the car is dead quiet now. I did new guibos, new center support bearing, and greased both inputs into the transfer case and all is good.
Also, I was able to remove my driveshaft without dropping my exhaust on my 06 4.8is.

It took me considerably longer (like a couple of weeks) because I had a couple of frozen bolts/nuts on the rear shaft guibo (flex disc) and worse yet, my centering sleeve/bearing (not the center support, that was easy) for the rear driveshaft was frozen in the drive shaft and on the output flange of the transfer case. Talk about a fun time. Front shaft rehab was easy peezy. Took like a couple of hours.
