X5 Sport Steering Wheel Trim Replacement DIY

One of the best upgrades you can make to your sport package X5 for around $70. Replaced the steering wheel trim recently and uploaded another DIY on the job. Now if only we had a good source for leather wheel re-wrapping!

Dallas Custom Steering Wheel

From what I remember they are super expensive....Might be better off source a used one or biting the button and buying a new one. Coby Wheel is another recommendation, I've used him in the past on my E46 wheel but he may only do alcantara rewraps?

Yeah it is super expensive! So is a new wheel from BMW. Well, E53 sport wheel new at dealer is less than an E30 M Tech wheel at least!

I just purchased and received my steering wheel from the EBAY vendor Ledermanz and have to say that I was very surprised by the turnaround time and quality of the recovering. Just awesome. I ordered the wheel on a Sunday it shipped on Monday and one week later its here at my doorstep.

I hate the stock X5 sport wheel in my 4.6is... aside from being super worn with tattered stitching, it's pretty thin without any of the contouring that I like. I plan to replace my wheel with a good condition M5 one. Clemster over on M5Board parts out tons of M5's so he often has some nice wheels in stock. I got a very nice M5 wheel from him for only $300 that I put in my 540it.

I was bothered with stock plastic trim on 4.6is steering wheel.
IMO, wood looks more rich and I was able to source it from 4.4 salvage vehicle and now it matches my interior.

I dig what you did with your wheel, but I just don't like how the E46/E53 sport wheel feels... it's too thin. I'm spoiled by the M5 steering wheel in my 540it, it's nicely bolstered and much thicker which makes it great for aggressive driving.

Sent it to the trash...

The late model face lift E53 sport wheel is nice and fat actually. It's the early sport wheel that is thin.

Has the trim been upgraded by BMW? I have a 2006 facelift and the sports wheel trim looks horrible - why didn't they just use black plastic??? The odd thing with the old ones is that they are black on the back too, I would have expected them to be white.

What are the alternatives? I don't mind buying a new one but I don't want the finish peeling off again. Anyone gone for CF?
