weird rear passenger doors unlock sporadically by central locking
I have 2005 BMW x5 and weird situation the doors don't unlock sporadically after several lock/ unlock tries by either the central unlocking switch. both rear doors are the only issue.. both unlock once in "n" tries. don't know where to look. It would have been clear if its totally dead. They do unlock with say 5-10 lock unlock tries by central locking system. Please help throw some ideas where to start looking. Thanks |

The motor is worn out. See my thread how to fix for $6 vs replace for $230
Search awr-fix actuator in title

thank you for the possible solution.
I have one question, if indeed is the weak or failing motor in the actuator, i would assume each of the rear doors behave differently.. but the intermittent unlock failure and working is pretty consistent. Meaning the rear doors either unlock or not unlock, not like one works and ither doesn't. Based on this observation i did further research and there may be a relay problem GM3 as per https://www.bmwgm5.com which needs this unit service to replace the relay. I had ordered the motors just incase its indeed is the actuator but appears this unit relay probably dying and might have gotten carbon corrosion on the terminals preventing it to have good contact. I had contacted Scott who provides this GM3 service and see what his diagnosis says. Thanks for response and if i do fix actuator motor your instructions are golden as reference .. thank you |

The motors wear out by the brushes being consumed. They can wear more on one side or the other which will have them randomly work one way better than the other before they stop completely.
All four of my wife's died within 8 month. If you have auto lock enabled plan on having them all start to go out one at a time. Usually they will work a little better when warm. I have one actuator that is going out on my car now (right front aka passenger USA). It will usually open on the second attempt but within a month or three it won't. I'll be ordering a few of the motors. I only use the brushes then no switching of the gear or finding the CCW vs CW motor (for the double lock).

If both doors operate the same weird way always then you are correct there is a good chance it's a different part. I seem to recall in my scan tool I can lock unlock the front doors individually but the rears go together. I would do like you say first. I must have missed the both act up in unison.
They could just be equally worn out. Take a video when they do work in slow motion and see if they are going up/down in perfect sync. Let us know the results of the relay.

yes thats right.. the rear doors are one relay in the GM3 module.
GM3 has 4 relays and relay 3 drives both rear doors locks. thats why i was suspecting the relay as the culprit. Also good point about the motors accumulating carbon after several cycles. My observation about BMW in general is the motors/spinning parts in bmw are designed to be failed after some years. Example the fuel pump failed on a highway for me last year out of curiousity i had cut open the pump and it was baked in carbon and worn out brushes. soon after that alternator failed and same issue brushes worn out and all carbon. Based on this observation i might still do the actuator motor.. Another great idea is to use the brushes from new motor than trying to remove the worm gear onto new motor. I have an older lexus Rx300 than x5 and how come lexus doesn't have such wear out. wierd ha... |

4 Pack - 20mm Round Shaft Central Door Lock Actuator Motor FC-280PC-22125, Spindle, Power Locking Repair Engine https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00IARIVUQ..._ebm4Cb59WVJ67
Can be any variation: 10/20mm shaft or flat or round shaft since you'd only use the end of the motor.
