steptronic replacement what to remove??

I have to replace my steptronic in my e53 can it be taken out through plastic surround or does the whole centre console have to be removed,

Hey Des, what exactly are you trying to remove? Just the gear lever or the whole gearbox?

There's a few variations in the E53 family too - it'll help us to help you if you mention what year, engine, transmission, etc.

2004 e53 3.0d auto: steptronic gear level / switch is faulty, so i have to replace whole unit, just needed to know how much i have to take apart the centre console to remove the level control unit.cheers

I think you do (as in, remove the entire centre console)... Here's the pages form the factory manual: -
