Key in position to use Homelink button???

Hi All,

Just purchased 2004 X5 4.4.

Finally, I made the homelink button working. Gsh, I think I spent some hours to make this thing works.

Question, does this button only works if the engine is on or key in #2 position?
I tried with out key or key in posotion #1 but didn't work (even reseting didn't work). It only works if the key is in #2 no mater the engine is on or not.

Funny... if this is correct, you just came back from the shopping and make sure you close the door before you turn off the engine, right?

What's the point? I guess I'd better just keep the remote in case the key is not in position #3...

Homelink button only works when key is position #2 (engine running or not running).

What you do is open the garage door with the homelink....Then park the car, then close the garage door with the homelink while the car is running and then turn off your car immediately before the garage door closes. That's how I do it....If not, then leave the garage door open, get out the car and close the garage door using the wall button in the garage.

It's kind of a pain to remember to close the garage door before turning off the car. I've been thinking about tapping the radio power for the UGDO to get around this.

For me I just hit the button before turning off the motor and when the door starts closing the i turn the engine off.

IMO it's not an issue at all. What's the difference betwenn the 5 second interval in hitting the button once you park and hitting a button once you turn the car off?

Guess it's just not a big deal to me, certainly not a big enough deal to splice into the OEM wiring.

What was your greatest difficulty in getting that to work? Did you know about the instructional article here?

Yes, I found the instructions in couple of different places but it wasn't that just easy.
For example, during my last key programming, I was programming all three buttons at the same time but only one button works. I couldn't notice what was the different with other button programming. May be the distance between homeliink buttons and remote buttons during programming..

Doing it is no prob. Remembering to do it is the prob.

Tapping into the radio power was just a thought. I'm too lazy to actually do it. Plus I can close the garage door with my key fob for my house security system.

Gee... I'm starting to feel low tech. As I approach house I push button to open garage door. I park, turn off vehicle. As I walk in house door I press glowing button on wall. Garage door closes.

I owned my 540i 3 years and never bothered programming the homelink buttons. Then I bought my X5, found this website, and now I have to do everything listed in the FAQ's because i can no longer claim ignorance. :p
