2002 4.6is upper oil pan

Hey all,
I've been trying to get my upper oil pan off mostly so I can get at the chain adjustment to reduce the slack in the chain. Without boring you, let's assume I've removed every bolt on the pan and tranny bell housing. The only thing I have not touched is the oil pump itself and the steering rack which is still attached to the subframe. But my pan just won't break free. Could the gasket be that stubborn? Or do I need to remove the pump first before the upper oil pan will come off?
