"Sports Rear Silencer"
I also came across the "sports rear silencer" on realoem - part #18100143740. The line drawing looks identical to the 4.6is part but without the oval tips. Realoem shows the part as ENDED as well as the individual left/right mufflers, but it still appears to be order-able on getbmwparts for about $800 shipped. Anyone familiar with this part?

Yes, the 4.6 sounds throatier but it's also a big V8. If you where to swap that onto a 3.0 doubtful it would sound the same or louder. If you want some more sound ditch the resonator and put a X pipe (if you can) or just delete it.

Not very familiar with the part that you described. The 4.6is mufflers will bolt up, however the 4.8is will require modification. The iS mufflers had a few baffles deleted so they are a bit louder than the 3.0 and the 4.4 mufflers. If you delete the resonator you'll hear a lot of raspy-ness out of the exhaust that I'm personally not a fan of. I looked up videos on youtube of people who did muffler deletes with resonators, resonator deletes with mufflers, straight pipes (etc.) and what I think I've come up with was putting an exhaust cut out in between the resonator and the mufflers (for a temporary muffler delete). Even if you can't find videos of the X5's with certain exhaust set ups, it doesn't hurt to look at the e46s that have been modified.
Congratulations on the 5mt X5. I just put the 4.4 mufflers on my black 5 speed and of course it didn't get any louder (but they were swapped for a different reason . The exhaust isn't too hard to replace but I can tell you, both of the exhausts that I had to drop (diy) I had to cut every bolt of and replace. Thanks PA-MD winters...

Thanks for the info, Skeletor. I tried ordering that factory sports rear silencer, but my order was canceled due to NLA. It sounded interesting in that it was a quad-tippped stainless system promising a "sporting exhaust note". With discounts, it would have been <$750 shipped.
I ordered a set of 4.6is mufflers off ebay; so, I'll give those a shot. I mostly want the looks, but a small amount of extra exhaust note would be welcome, too. I don't think I'll mess with the resonator because I don't like that raspy sound, either. I'll post pics in the MT thread when I get further along, but my MT is very clean and has NO corrosion underneath (no road salt here in the PNW). It's silver on black, and I've installed the Dynavin N6 already and 3-spoke M-sport steering wheel from an E39. I've got Eibach lowering springs & Bilstein HD's, factory tow kit, 3.64 diffs, 4.6is big brakes, and those 4.6is mufflers going on shortly. Now all I need is to source a set of Style 87's to complete the look! (damn ebay seller just backed out on a set that I won for $800!)

The sport exhaust mufflers can be purchased off ebay as well for cheap. They are the 4.4i "sport" optioned mufflers. Comes with the quad tips (dual twin tips) and are usually black colored for the tips.

Yeah, in the Corvette world, I've gotten a few sets of Dymag wheels for a song off craigslist. For the X5, I've seen some good deals on 19's, but I worry about the weight and tire selection as compared to the 20-inch 87's. Regardless, I'll need something to clear the bigger is brakes, which I'll install at my next brake pad light-on.
