Check Break Linings?

Today my after filling up a full tank of gas, i got into my x5 and about to turn on the ignition and all of a sudden the display says "check brake Lining". I have no idea what this means but when i called ROB he says that its my break pads that needs to be change. The break light also appear in red while driving. Is this normal? I have and 01 x5 with almost 45K onit
Is this true?
And how much would this cost?
If i change it with a independent machinic using Axis pad deluxe would the signal light go away?

Perfectly normal. Once you change your pad, rotors, and sensors, the lights should go off. Dealer will charge you probably around $500 per axle, parts and labor.

so i have to change the rotors and sensors too or just the pad will do?

If I lived only 2 hrs from Rob_, I'd be motoring down to his loc. for any work on my X. He is first class, imo!

Rob will surely answer this with more authority, but I believe BMW does not believe in replacing only the pads. Whey they do a brake job, they replace the pads, rotors, and sensors. MB is the same way.

That's what I thought too, but Adam said that if the rotors still have enough thickness, you just replace the pads.

Yeah, if the rotors are thicker than 10.5mm you can keep them. You might as well replace them though, it stands to reason that if you don't, sometime during the life of your pads the rotors will wear thinner than the tolerance. I just did mine, and the job could not be an easier DIY. It couldn't be more simple, the difficulty comes in when you need to loosen some bolts that require a significant amount of elbow grease. I ordered my rotors online, they were only $50/piece. $500 sounds right for the stealer to do it, much cheaper as a DIY though. Have fun!

Yeah i heard the story today. I think ihave to do it yourself and i have to buy the sensors with it right. I think i am going to let some german certified mechanic shop do this and i buy the equipment. i dont trust myself and i dont have the tools to do it. How much are the sensors? Jwalsh22 what site did your order the rotors from?

That's a new one on me... Concord BMW and Dublin BMW (my locals) always mandate pads, rotors and sensors when the light comes on.

Sensors are really cheap. Like less than $15 I think.
