historically, german car manufacturers like to use "thin" or "just right thicknesses" on their rotors. this saves weight and prevents chances of warping rotors over the course of a few pad changes... this goes for bmw, audi, mb, porsche as standard and inline with the performance angle...

so when your pads wear down, the sensor is used up.. that means you replace all 3 components at once. if you replaced before the sensor is used (before the dash light is triggered), then you can reuse the sensors. if you have the dash light on, then one or both of the sensors is worn also...

Hayaku,

My question to you is when replacing the pads, does the rotors needs to be machined again?

You're not supposed to machine BMW rotors. They're too soft.

Not all dealers will change out rotors when they change pads. However, I've never heard of any of them machineing rotors or turning them.

My pads + rotors lasted around 15k miles.

bmw spec is to replace the rotors.

i think after their normal duty cycle of wear of 1 pad, the rotor would be pretty close to the minimum thickness... so if you turned the rotors, you would end go under that spec and make the disc unsafe...

dealers change the rotors depending on how close the rotor is to that minumum thickness. the better ones change rotors with pads regardless... the cheaper ones will only change the pads and tell you the rotors are still not at min thickness...

I found this on ebay and thinking bout getting them for my X5 01 4.4i. Please let me know if this will fit on my vehicle and what do you guys reccomend if not these. I am going to also use the Axis pad since most if not all reccomend those as less dust and good performance pads. I believe i need 2 break sensors for the front since they are intiated on the instrument panels and keep the 2 in the back as it is. Just in case i need it i will get 2 more. Please give me advice and your opinon would greatly be appreciated.

Unless you're doing hard driving there's no reason to get either one. I've read that cross drilled rotors warp easier. Slotted should be fine. How much are oem rotors?
