curious to know how you can tell from just the headlights..

A picture is worth 1000 words...

4.6is (as all pre-facelift cars) has top and bottom edges of headlight that are close to parallel, with small semi-circular sections along the bottom edge. The left and right fender front edge is a straight line joint with the bumper.

4.8is (as all LCI or facelift cars) have curvy headlights, angel eye marker lights and an upward hooked front fender/bumper interface.

There are many other differences too (the lower line of the hood under the kidney grills, the fog lamp escutcheon, etc.) but the headlights are the really obvious item.

ohh,, sorry you were comparing the 4.8 headlights to 4.6 headlights,
i misunderstood.
i somehow took it as 4.6 vs 4.4/3.0

yes haha, i can tell the difference between the 4.6 and 4.8 headlights. the fog lights are huge giveaway and as well as the turn signals.

Bumper lowers are the giveaway to tell 4.6is from a 3.0 or 4.4...

Pre facelift...

Or a 4.8is from an LCI 3.0 or 4.4

LCI (facelift)...

If you get the VIN, you can know every spec it was delivered with.

Definitely shows as a 4.6is... though I'm surprised you are interested. Does this mean we can look forward to all the future 4.6is is a terrible vehicle threads and comments?

Or are you looking to upgrade the towing abilities from the 3.0? That's a good price... but I'd suspect it needs trans work, chain guide work, or some other combination of expensive maintenance. Worth taking a look at for sure though.
