e53 pfl 3.0d steptronic only works in manual mode.

Hi,

My 2002 pfl 5 gear steptronic only works in manual mode. Meaning to say it will not automatically down or upshift in normal D mode.

The PO says its due to the "chip" it has, which I doubt as the ECU surely does not convey such data to the TCU.

Could it be a cable break in the shifter mechanism?

Does the dash gear change (D N P etc) if it does then it's probably internal to the transmission. Very odd it would get to this point without giving you failsafe mode.

Is strange it would just drop out without going in to failsafe at least once..

Are you able to pull codes and see if anything is showing up? If manual mode is working it wouldn't be cable related as you have to get it into drive for the steptronic to work.

Could be a failed harness internal to the mech unit but that's really reaching without pulling codes and seeing if anything is stored.

I would say check your fluid too but that's easier said than done.

Does it work in Sport mode or Manual only? I know you said nothing in "Drive".

Thanks 4 ur replies.

It drives perfectly well in sport/manual mode. In D it will shift up to 3rd gear but no higher. Ones put via manual to 4-5 it will downshift fine in D....

It has a replacement TUC but hasn't been programmed, I do not know if the previous TUC has exactly the same partnumber.

The po has driven around with it like this for the past two years!?

I will read out the fault codes when I can, as they might not even have been removed previously and let you know.
