Slack in exterior driver door handle

Hi guys! New to the forum.

Bought my wife an 06 E53 a couple months ago and having fun fixing all the quirky issues on this thing.

The driver side door handle requires me to pull the handle almost all the way up to open the door from the outside.

After reading many threads on door handles, I'm wondering if this requires the whole carrier to be replaced, or if I can just replace the cable?

I'm assuming that if the carrier itself was broken that the handle wouldn't work at all, is that right?

If so, does anyone know the part number for just the cable? All I can find is the interior door handle cable. Do I have to buy the whole carrier to get the cable?

Thanks!

Not likely to be just the cable. You'll need to repair (AndrewWynn has a method on this) or replace the whole door handle carrier. I've now replaced all 4 of these on my 2001, all with Febi parts, all fitting well and with no problems.

The common failure point is a little U in the Aluminum casting that holds the pivot in place. This eventually breaks off and the handle does nothing. But sometimes before that, only one side of the U breaks and the other side just bends a little, so you have to pull the handle further out.

You might want to replace both sides, or at least feel for how they feel.

Also, while you're in there, inspect the window regulators - another current thread on that. I swear, the door components on these cars ...

You can open the door and the handle just doesn't go down all the way almost certainly the hinge has broken on the axle. It is not a difficult repair follow the guide that I made
