Not surprising, Jon. I had the same thing happen when I arranged a meet last year. Our e53 compatriots are a little flaky compared to other BMW model owners.

I wish I would seen this post sooner. When do you plan on doing a next little meet-up Jon?

IMHO, you need to have an end game for a meet other than a parking lot or a pizza joint to meet and talk about what we all talk about on a daily basis here on our forum.

I would suggest something different like an actual event that enthusiasts are willing to drive several hours for to attend. To do something they have never done or always wanted to do.

Although a little south of the Mid-Atlantic in South Carolina is the Zentrum museum and BMW Spartanburg plant where the X5 was built. I would love to take a plant tour to see all the X models being built including the new X7 and visiting the Zentrum museum on the site.

Even a day trip with an overnight stay through the mountains like Tail of the Dragon in Tennessee would make me want to make the 4 hour trip. I can only imagine the spirited driving during the day and a great gathering for dinner later that night at the hotel.

People are busy in their lives and it is always difficult to get commitment but having an actual end game may help.

I'd consider a 'larger' event to Spartansburg, SC - it's roughly 7 hours for me.

It's fun to have a lot of people join in on these things instead of 3-4 vehicles... I think that'll be the hard part, getting people to commit.

M5board was great for years in doing this, they had an event called TimmayFest and it was well organized. I attended a few years ago, and they would get guys from all over the country (FL, GA, CA, NY, NJ, PA, DC, VA, etc). They had events for each day, hotel rooms blocked off, drag/dyno day, cars & coffee events, etc.

If someone is willing to work out a tour of the plant or hosting a local cars & coffee - it could be worth the time and effort.

I guess the biggest problem with this museum and plant tour would be availability of our members being able to make this event during the week. The plant tours offer a 1 and 2 hour guided tour and the museum is self guided but the hours are only Monday through Friday. This might deflate our event before it even gets out of discussion.

That being said, here is a link to the plant tours with an embedded link to the museum tours.

If we are held to weekend hours only, the "Tail of the Dragon" may be another choice. I have been wanting to go for about 10 years now and have yet to make the trip. The views in the Appalachians is nothing short of spectacular in the fall so just throwing this out there if the weekday events are off the table. 314 turns in 11 miles.
