Airbag reset tool
I found this tool on Amazon that says it will work for up to model year 2003 and lists the X5 in the vehicles it'll work for. My truck is an 03 (production 11/2002). Can anyone tell me if it'll work? I'd prefer not to spend $100+ if possible. When I got my 2001 (6/01 production), it had the airbag light on. So I bought a tool on eBay that looks just like that one on Amazon. Works great. The only weird thing is that I usually have to do the reset process twice and it works on the second try, every time.
I got mine on eBay for about $20. I think the "800" is the key number there. And it is very convenient, having had the door panels off about a dozen times, to not worry about triggering the airbag light. Usually, I disconnect the battery then remove the airbag, etc. Then at some point I'll want power restored so I can drive the window. That (restoring power with the airbag disconnected) is what triggers the light for me. Also, I'm closing on 4 years now, still holding off on needing to buy a BMW-specific OBD2 tool other than this airbag tool.

I would buy BMW Scanner 1.4 (PA Soft 1.4) from Amazon or Ebay and it will clear airbag codes and allow for a lot of other programming and code reading/clearing. Cost is less than $20 with dongle and is my first go-to tool in my collection.

$20 plus $500-3000 laptop that runs an unsupported operating system. I bought an NT-510 because I didn't want to run the kludgy more than 20 yr old software solution. Yep if you already have an old laptop with old os on it and can tolerate touching windows It can work: plenty of people never get the kludgy serial port to connect. The big advantage is coding. Foxwell will read almost anything and can program plenty such as idle speed or reset transmission adaptations but can't program auto lock of doors.

Different solutions for different people / situations.
I've actually got a few old, dormant XP laptops floating (not literally) around the house here. And yes, if I ever really needed serious OBD2 programming or reading capabilities, I may sign myself up for the research project required to get one of those cheap eBay software XP solutions to work. But being afraid of underbidding the hours required on that research effort, I'm kicking that can down the road as long as I can. That airbag-only eBay tool solution does exactly one thing (well two, if you count reading and erasing codes as two things), is stand-alone, powered by the OBD port, and as you might expect, it gets it done.

I don't have an XP laptop but I know how to use a VM with an XP image. It looks like the 1.4 tool needs a USb cable like a printer, is that correct? Or so you actually need a serial cable?

BMW Scanner 1.4 works on XP and later. Just need the FTDI drivers for Windows 10.

I'm with oldskewel on the kick the can but I ended up buying the foxwell so I could deal with both abs and air bag also super helpful for troubleshooting since it can activate devices.

By activate devices, do you mean it can activate new things like if I added heated seats?
