N62TU Eccentric Shaft Gear Damage - WWYD?
So, PO hired a shade-tree mechanic (read: shady), who did a number on the driver's side eccentric shaft gear surfaces. There appear to be three broken teeth. Engine operated well enough that I didn't notice anything off when I test drove the vehicle.
The $1M question: What would you do?
I'm looking at $200 for a used cylinder head (to get the replacement shaft), and about $1500 in tools to be able to replace the part.
I really don't want to get into those "while you're in there" items like VSSs. I was hoping to put that off for a little while, as it's not called for based on engine symptoms/smoke. Then again, if I have the shaft removed, I imagine it becomes far easier to replace the VSSs. (at least on that one side)
Words of sympathy and/or encouragement are appreciated, in addition to your sage advice.
