Lower Oil Pan Gasket

hey all again i was just wondering if there is a DIY for gasket replacement on the lower oil pan? i have been searching but can't find anything

- Search "Bimmerfest E39" forum for the oil pan gasket DIY.
It is a 8-10h job, unless you do the "gasket cutting technique + RTV patch" technique.

- The passenger's axle runs through the oil pan, so it is an added step for the AWD model (vs RWD model).

- First, make sure it is NOT the OFH gasket, which is a $6 item and easy DIY.

i have the 4.4 i heard its easier to do the 3.0 one i heard is the long job

another question is when replacing the gasket on the oil pan is there some thing i got to put on the gasket for it to stick on ?

For 00-03 4.4, it's just unscrewing few bolts, new gasket on, install oil pan back on.
Not hard at all.

I've put some black rtv on the 4 corners where there is a slit on the block.. Having a second person around will help a lot to put the bolts on while you are holding the pan

would this be fine to use for the oil pan gasket?

i'm doing mine this weekend. its a piece of cake job. the hard part is the splash shield.

- put the car on a jackstand
- remove five of the six bolts holding the shield in place and rotate the shield out of the way to have access to the oil pan. i won't take the entire shield off if i was you.
- once you have access to the oil pan. drain the oil out completely. bottom and top (oil filter housing) advice you wait at least 30 mins
- unscrew the bolts holding the oil pressure sensor, 3 10mm nuts and pull the sensor and unplug
- then unscrew all the bolts holding the pan up. there is about 15 of them, all the same size.
- drop the pan and peel of the gasket. or don't forget to also replace the gasket on the oil pressure sensor as well.
- some recommend adding sealant to the oil pan gasket.
- once new gasket is on, put the oil pan back up and screw all the bolts. torque it down to specs. i don't remember the torque specs, i believe its 15lbs, i stand corrected.
- replace the gasket on the oil pressure sensor and put the sensor back in place.
- make sure everything is right. before you bolt the shield back up.
- add oil, change oil filter and you know the rest.

You can do this without pulling the axle that goes through the pan?!
