adjustable air suspension question

before i get cussed out...i have searched


i would like to know whats the point of having this feature since it goes to the normal height after 20mph?

i've heard the dealer can change something and make it stay at a selected setting... i asked my dealer, and they have no clue of any such thing.

so does anyone know how to make the X STAY at the high or low setting until changed?

Ive tried it and it is impossible as far as i know. I went to several different dealers and tried many aftermarket companies no one could do it. and i have not meet anyone who has it done yet. you can change the hieght at which each setting is set. But you can not make it say at the lowest or highest setting at all times.

Not good news for you..... You will find that its about 50kph (unless they have changed it recently, mine is a 2005) before she will drop back to standard height, this is usually fast enough if you are in difficult terrain. The dealer can't change the speed perameters but can change the heights it sets to at the 3 options. (some will do it!!) You can buy a module to keep it at the selected height but I have decided not to. The air spring changes its spring rate with different heights and the shock absorber has fixed valving, and thus will not be matched to the height change (spring rate). This could be dangerous as it would change handling performance. Not forgetting slight changes in wheel alignment which could see an increase in tyre wear....

The high setting is probably meant for low speed use only,
negotiating difficult terrain,
deep snow where the vehicle would be grounding out etc
Raising the centre of gravity, even a few inches, can have a dramatic effect on high speed handling.
Audi allroad has 4 height settings and behaves similarly,
the higher the speed, the lower you go.

I'm just collecting my new 4.8is today and my dealer has set the baseline ride height approx 10mm lower than standard, so you dealers can adjust it that way. Otherwise aftermarket companies can provide an in-line box that can be used to set one of the selectable ride heights as a default setting. Thorney at www.ultimatex5.com had it running on his demo 4.8is and can provide this. Otherwise I always find myself selecting the lowest setting when I can park and if I'm going off-road or need to climb over any kerbs I set it on the off-road height to provide more clearance. It would be nice if it would select a lower ride height when up to speed, but it doesn't.

Real old thread revival here...I parked next to another X yesterday, and with mine in the middle position, it was noticably lower than the other X. In the High setting, mine was where this other X was. So, I can have the dealer mod this so the intermediate height is higher than it is now? I feel like I'm sitting on the ground when I'm driving, it's pretty low..

Is the suspension capable of automatically going to the lowest setting when turning off the vehicle... like the Range Rover does?
