If the trans dumps, r you keeping it

Ha. I feel like Props right now on this post but more a philosophical one .

The original plan was to keep the truck 2-3 years after the warranty ran out.
Somehow, she's managed to stay under the roof up till today.

When the rear BBK went dunzo, I weighed my options. Wan't really much even a option on decision as the time/effort/$ to even go back to stock with no stock hardware in hand to sell it, ended up with one helluva brake job as the car needed working brakes regardless.

Fast forward what feels like 3 weeks later, and now the trans.
I've got much much more in the truck than the truck has it for me ;-)
So off for another trans.

Be curious for the fellow longtime maintainers. Is the trans a easy No or a half/half yes

Which trans and what’s wrong with it?

5HP24. Atypical symptom of the A drum.

Prices on the X has dropped to the point that a running X will be cheaper than a replacement trans.

I wouldn't bother replacing the trans, just buy another car or truck or SUV.

I wouldn’t do that if a lot of work has already been done on the engine and it’s rust free. Sure they are cheap, but all the issues you are having now may be right around the corner on the next one.

I agree. The main reason why I still have one is because they are so cheap that I would rather keep a fully functional, zero paiment, good looking, and performance SAV than buying anything else for that money. I’m sure a rebuild or salvage trans would be a lot cheaper than an x5 also. Yea the 3.0 are fairly easy to get, but mostly zero history and shit load of problems.

Literally almost every wearing component is fresh, new or redone...
Rear Susp - including, bags, struts, bushing, BJ, Swingarms
Fronts - I think the only thing that is not 100% replaced is coils but everything from Valley Pan, Timing, Oil Pan gasket, Cooling, PS, charging, mounts, suspension...the list has been redone 1X if not 2/3X on some
Front Seats - DS got a brand NEW OE cover and some extra foam tucked here and there and then the entire front and panels were resprayed so the front was uniform with the NEW DS cover. ALL 4 doors has fresh gaskets. Boy, those things are alot tricker than they look to get it to fit in perfect. The M3 Sport Steering Wheel is like the 2nd or 3rd One. I can't stand sh1t looking worn so when there is driver wear and it starts to smooth....I flip the old one on Ebay, recoup whatever I recoup and apply it towards the new one that has some more graining/toothiness to the leather.
New OE Comfort Windshield as of this year

It's not a ordinary ~used~ car....

I would be replacing the trans and keeping the truck. In sort of the same situation as you in that a lot of work has been/will have been done. Finding another with the same sort of maintenance would be next to impossible save purchasing one from another member here. And that wouldn't be a cheap purchase because of said maintenance history.

I went through the same thing about 2 months ago. I saw an x5m for 22k with reasonable miles. I figure let me buy that and sell mine after. My buddy was on board to make the same move from His dinan X to an e70 x5m. Once we started discussing mods on the e70 that’s when we realized how bad of an idea that was. Between sales tax, exhaust, tuning, intakes, tints, lighting, rims, facelift lighting, etc we realized this wasn’t a 10-15k upgrade. Probably more of a 20-25k upgrade after you get into maintenance. 4.8is is still the best value for performance and looks.

+1 on keep and repair given known history and work done to date. Have done mine for that reason. Good luck with decision.
