A 9 tooth starter will deliver more torque but at a lower speed than an 11 tooth starter. Can't seem to find any info. on what is standard.
Maybe that's the only difference between the 2.0kW and the 2.kW - the 2.0kW has 11 teeth and the 2.2kW has only 9 teeth?

Evening sir, well today it all happened, took x5 to an auto electrician that was recommended to me by my father in law....guy was happy for me to stick around while he whipped out old starter in about 1 hour. He dismantled it and said needed a new one, some of the teeth on inside looked a bit worse for wear (i'll attach pics at a later time). He tried to source a second hand equivalent bmw one , wrong one came, then I opened my mouth suggested (and told him price quoted to me) we get the herth+buss brand, sooooooo item arrived (remanufactured bosch basically) and supplier told me more than once it is correct for X5 3.0d 160kw 2004 model. Ok so mr annakis(yup anakin skywalker came to mind) tried to install it, 2 torx bolts matched and were tightened fine but it would just not sit snug and flush (see image there was gap)...so he took it off and decided to increase the diameter of the center top most guide hole with a drill bit...same thing, after hours and hours of cursing and drilling and even angle grinding NO joy...it would not sit ok. Called up reseller he slated the sales guy(all honesty wasnt the sales persons fault) and they told us to return it....in the meantime he got hold of a second hand valeo, but nope no fit again. Then some other new probably chinese? casco brand turned up, seemed a perfect fit and I didn't want to sit argue on brand cos he would have decked me...So I made my way to the store, once they saw the once new non fitting starter had been attacked they started to uhmmm and errrr, thankfully boss was so fed of saga he just took starter and refunded me. By the time I got back the new starter was on and all car back together.....and jeez does it make a difference it flashes into life!!!!!!!...checked the web and it is 2.2kw starter. anyhow he wouldn't give me my old one back and i forgot to mention that he subsequently said he would try to salvage it, and that taking it apart the 2 bolts on the housing snapped and were stuck, well he gave me a good price to recon it and make it just as good at starting as the new one (not sure how he can the buggered make 2.0kw originall as fast as the 2.2kw one?) Been one hell of a road this starter........@Wpoll and andrewynn both you fellas were right was the starter indeed, was no bad batter, no bad ground or connection, so I have ended up with the below starter( now remains to be seen if old one being 'bad' was a contributing factor to my battery needing topping up.. ![]() https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Starter-m...uuZ:rk:11:pf:0

Mate thanks, apparently even 9 teeth is ok but it was an 11 teeth Denso that was stock on vehicle.....looking forward just wondering IF i should fork out 80euros for the guy to revive the original denso incase this seemingly chinese ones packs in (no disrespect to anyone chinese reading here by the way, and for what its worth pretty sure that part of bosch has been outsourced there and part of bosch been bought out by some chinese firm too).
Anyway Carbon brushes were fine but the inside looked pretty dusty with a few flakes that seemed to have come off the magnets in the housing ...at least having the original one back there is no doubt it is a match What a day.....got there at 9am and got bcak home at 5pm with a 1 hour wonder around during their lunch break....thanks again PS also vibered my battery man who had said the starter was NOT an issue....asking him if there was a way to preserve the new battery he gave me that i didnt really need , no answer yet. I may just keep it on rather than put back the bosch.reply is from herth+buss when I queried their parts compatibilty. I forwarded your e-mail to product manager. According his feedback you can mount item no. 42017300 1. picture with Denso 7788680 > 2,0 kW; 11 teeth H+B Elparts 42017300 > 2,0 kW; 9 teeth but it’s not important because the gear is not centrally mounted. Hope I could help you Mit freundlichen Grüßen | Best regards Herth+Buss Fahrzeugteile GmbH & Co. KG i.A.

Wpoll hope all well, massive favour 2, can you please a take peak under your X5 and see if the sump/reinforcing plate sits flush so to spaak with the plastic covering that extends under passenger driver seat? starter guy i think has put mine on wrong and have 2 protruding lips sitting over the metal plate whereas i think they should slip under it...grrrrr.... https://xoutpost.com/bmw-sav-forums/...xle-cover.html

The starter teeth are matched to mesh properly with those of the flywheel just like a differential ring and pinion are matched. Changing the number of teeth in either direction should necessitate changing the flywheel to match. The solution to spinning the engine faster is a more powerful starter motor that has the same number of teeth on the starter gear as the original. A stock starter works just fine. I see no reason on any of our engines to try to increase torque. The quickest, least expensive route is almost always to buy quality exact replacement parts.

Thanks bcredliner.....and phew i got an 11 teeth starter to replace an 11 teeth lazy one..good thing i never listened to one aftermarket supports info that said a 9 thooth one would be fine...dont s
uppose you saw the query i made on the plastic covering that sits under driver n passenger side of car after the sump gaurd / stabilizer...for the life of me cant recall if the 2 tabs or lips slip in under the sump protector.... Ps you are right going for stock like for like replacement would jave been best but heard fron a few other 3.0d owners that early starters were flawed...so didnt want to go for the same again...and the 2.0w just fine sure but noticed many remanufactured originals and others were 2.2kw
