Problem was not solved as I thought. I had not reconnected the wires to the solenoids. It is interesting that the car ran better with the solenoids disconnected. I notice some other members of Xoutpost have also observed this phenomenon when they have Vanos solenoid problems. I was alerted to this when I used the scanner and found that the original codes had disappeared and were replaced by two codes which indicated that the solenoids were disconnected. This may have been an indication that the solenoids were the problem. When I connected them again the errors and symptoms were back but I think I now may have solved the problem. Before I bought new solenoids I thought I would replace the two “o” rings on each of the four old solenoids (about $25 AUD from Germany) Lo and behold this fixed the problem. There may be a slight hesitation on heavy acceleration from low revs but I am not sure if that has not always been there.

hmm.. the joys of a false dawn with E53 repairs before the problem (or another) surfaces again (I know it well)....
Still... cleaning didn't fix it and replacement required is still better than levers so well done mate...
