First time headgasket guy, many thanks for the guidance on here and 50skid and Nathan’s DIY on YouTube for good tutorials. I finally got the head out today. Most frustrating part was that the rear of the head fought me all the way only to find out there was a zip tie around a cable that I had to cut to get it free.
What I found is encouraging but not100 %. Head does not appear warped or cracked giving it to machine shop today. Gasket did not appear to be damaged but it separated a bit into layers.
I noticed that the one bolt hole I found smudge on the bolt has the top of the thread separated. I guess at least one timesert is coming.
One thing that seemed odd to me (but im not greatly experienced) Some of the bolt holes in the block were neat and clean with maybe a hint of coolant, others had oil or oily goo in them. I hand tightened a bolt in a couple of them and hea d a tiny woosh of air and the ooze hopefully just from fluid in the threads.
Handed the head off to a local machine shop . $125 checked, cleaned, trued. A real character, professes to own a 69Shelby he bought new with only 69k miles.
He showed me spots on the gasket that were likely leaking and said from looking at the head it might have been machined before but the gasket looks original. Odd.
Should get the head back Thurs.
