heater blower

hey guys its time for another fault to give me another headache!! I'm just about to let her have the X5 as we have a baby on the way and now the heater blower has packed up...

it had had a squeak intermittently for the past month and after a long drive it has stopped working altogether...

I've had the air intake off from the engine side and had my fingertips on the fan and it seems tight i assume they should spin freely. it doesn't start to spin when i turn it but it does kinda fight me when i try and turn it backwards I'm guessing the brushes and commutator are expired..

my question is really do i need any special tools before i attempt to start ripping the dash out? Im guessing its going to be a day long affair i just didn't want to get half way through and then be tripped up by not having a specific tool. I have found a video on you tube showing it being taken out but he also takes the steering wheel off as well surely i can get away with leaving that on?

also anything else worth doing whilst I've got it all ripped apart? maintenance wise or cool mods?

any input would be much appreciated as always

Regards
Rob

Change the dash speakers, that is the best time!

Nothing else really. And it is better to remove everything around the steering wheel, this guy is big and you want all the space you can get.

No out of the ordinary tools, just tons of patience and screw memory.

You could also do the FSU, it's just a easier to access than normal anyway.
