Shakes, rattles and (grinding) rolls....

Since the 4.8is is off the road awaiting suspension parts for replacement, I decided to attend to a few annoying issues in both it and the 4.4 as I'm part hunting...

Sun visors

Does anyone know how to stop the rattles in the rear door sun visors? It's annoying the wife no end...

Door creak

The drivers door in my 4.4 creaks when you open and close it... Any ideas on what is needed as I'm about to do window clips and thought I'd have a crack at it too... Here's a vid

https://youtu.be/k7ModRHY4Vk

Transmission grind

The 4.8is has a grinding noise coming from the front shaft under acceleration and can be reproduced when accelerating after having done a right hand turn, and less so when having done a left hand turn. I'm thinking the giubo but will also do the transfer case gear at the same time. Does anyone else have a suggestion so I knock it over in one hit?

andrewwynn will become famous soon enough
The sun visor is easy to remove: there is a tiny notch at the top to insert a small screwdriver and push the retaining clip up to release the top.

Pull it off so you can manipulate and fimd the noise. The main body is snap together and I suspect it's partly split apart so the parts can slap. Put some clear silicone between the parts when reassembling

The front door creak sounds like the tensioner is binding. Remove that and see if the noise vaporizes. Determine if it's damaged or defective or just needs oil.

If noise remains it'll be easier to locate when that is out. Use an automotive stethoscope to determine which hinge is making the noise and lubricate or disassemble and grind/ file smooth and reassemble.

The drive shaft noise: record it. Guibo will not introduce "grinding". If you are getting a noise like a wheel bearing while turning it's likely CV or the mid shaft front shaft bearing. Again stethoscope

Thanks for the response mate...

re the grinding, it's coming up through the floor and is a vibration/grinding noise that goes right through the body.... best I can tell is that it's centre forward and only within certain revs/speed and under load of normal acceleration after turning a corner...

My indy has decided he's had enough of working on BMW's and I can't get him to test drive it now the suspension has collapsed again... so really have no idea...

^That grinding/vibrating noise sounds suspiciously like a center support bearing failure. Best to do the guibos and grease the splines of both shafts at the same time. Check on the CSB though... it's a lot cheaper to do it than have to replace the whole rear driveshaft because it's been flopping around.

Interesting to hear your indy has given up on BMW's... though I can't say it surprises me. It's hard to find a decent indy you can trust here in the States too.

I had my driver side door hinge limiter come slightly loose from the door jamb and made a pop every time the door opened. Check that torx bolt is tight.

Are you saying the grinding noise is always there but worse after a right turn or it is there for a short period of time after turning, especially right turns and goes away?

Thanks mate...

My wife reported it and it took a while for me to identify it as no, it's not there at all EXCEPT when accelerating after having gone around a corner. Then it's only at low speed under load up until approx 60kph (40 miles-ish?).

I can reproduce it every time after a corner to the right and it's softer after a corner to the left... Only normal throttle....

Thanks for that mate..

Yea pretty bummed about my indi.. he's actually fed up with people bringing in all of their 4 cylinders for head issues and associated dramas then people arguing the cost...

He had one client abusing him about getting their car ready for Christmas so he worked late into the night all weekend before and they didn't even show until the new year ( oh I changed my mind)....

Reckons myself and one other are the only two are the only ones who get the adventure of not knowing what else is broken when working on a bimmer...

RE the bearing, would that happen after turning a corner only?

No, not typically. After your follow up post above the CSB sounds less likely. It should do the rumble/vibration anytime you are under load and increase in intensity with increased load if the CSB is perished.
