4.8 engine

I don’t believe that 4.4 DME/ECU will rum the 4.8 engine. I too looked at this swap back in the day and if I recall correctly I also needed to pull the electronics from the donor vehicle or another 4.8 X.

I’m sure someone with more experience than I will chime in and confirm one way or the other.

EDIT: All that said, a decent used 4.8 should be available on eBay, or findable by some of your local salvage yards.

4.8 swap into 4.4i

Yes you are correct in that I also need the 4.8 DME.
I have checked our local junkyards to no luck.

That stinks, I just checked eBay too - he no idea 04-06 4.8s were so tough to find, wow!

Just thinking out loud, there’s a salvage yard here in Ohio called All Foreign Auto, I know it’s a stretch but maybe they can source one... then again, it does really look like the 4.8 is a rare engine - I honestly had no idea, the 4.4s seem to be a dime a dozen!

thanks I will try them ... agree we have a local shop but he is way too expensive wants 3200+ no trans DME extra 250. might as well sell mine and get a 4.8.

You said 2004, don’t you have the ZF trans? I thought the 4.4 and 4.8 shares the same trans?? If yours was working good, maybe pull the mech, do a solenoid set, bridge seal and pickup tubes with new filter, fluid and sleeve and roll with it. - would save you a few bucks for sure.

Hmmm, what about sleeving your 4.4 and bumping the bore to 4.8? Not sure the cost but by the time you do DME and find the donor motor.... maybe something to look at?

Just spit balling

4.8iS are a dime a dozen in the Middle East and if you're interested I'll have my parts guys find some. With luck we might be able to get a couple for 3,500 USD minus shipping of course but as "scrap" or whatever it may be worth while. I can check in Asia while I'm here too. Just have to figure what the total you'd be able to spend.

Give me a holler if you want.

You can use an N62TU but you will need to drill new holes for the exhaust manifold. Would be a lot easier (and likely cheaper) to source. 4.8is and 4.4i transmission is not the same, for starters, the torque converter is a different unit. Not sure what else on the transmission is different. If its just the TC that would be great. If not, get ready to source a 4.8is transmission. Would love to do this swap too, but for now my car is relatively low mile. 4.8 swap in a 4.4 should be faster too, thanks to the 4.10 diffs in the 4.4. At least that's what id assume. Good luck.
