Oil pan off the M62, replace oil pump?
Gents,
125k on my e53. Finally had the time to continue the disassembly. I am trying to seal the engine as it was quite dirty tho not really dripping. There was quite a bit of oil in the spark plug openings. Now that the lump is out, I will be doing the Vanos and the chaiin guides. It is time to order parts and I was wondering if I should replace the oil pump? Thoughts anyone?

I wouldn't. Not a common failure, not difficult to get to like say the oil separator.
Regtangrings however those will affect power and I would replace them. Are you doing the vanos refurb DIY? It's not too difficult and very rewarding.

Thanks. I had not seen oil pumps as an issue generally on this board. What are regtangrings?
Was going to go with a vendor for the Vanos but willing to take recommendations. :-)

I don't think oil pump failure is something I'd be concerned with - except in the case of the N52 in my wife's E83. I have a low mileage used pump on my bench to install when I get a chance. The current pump is noisy presumably due to damage from drive belt ingestion. This a a problem unique to this particular engine, though.
The M52TU in my e46 is over 250k mi. and I wouldn't replace the pump on that if I had the pan off. AM.

Rectangrings are the oil seal around the camshaft. They are officially recommended when removing the oil distribution unit for a high mileage repair . If under 100-120,000 i wouldn't probably replace them. At 160,000 we did.

I have 120k miles on it, will have to take a look how hard it is to change those rings in the distribution unit.
The O-ring for the oil pickup pipe I will change anyway as it is already off. My gut says to also detach the pump and change the three O-rings associated with the oil pump?

If you have the distribution units off the rectangrings are a simple thing to R/R. Be very careful they are stupid hard steel and the tooth is extremely fragile. Won't matter on the ones coming off but I'd maybe buy a spare or two if you can get from a place with a good return policy.
