Comments & Question.

Sorry for the rant.
Both the E53 & the E70 have been in for the airbag recall in the last week. In both cases a list of recommended work followed them home. The '01 needs the oil filter housing gasket changed because of an actual leak. Must be small as there is little evidence on the ground or in usage but it will be changed out by my indy soon. Also recommended was to protectively change the oil pan gasket because it was old and could leak. Only wanted $2+K for that one!!!!!
The '13 has a failing oil pan gasket. That's the one that really rankles me. For my edification could somebody please explain why, in this day and age, a 6 years old vehicle with only 65K miles NEEDS an oil pan gasket because of failure? I do not see the op as a particularly high stress area. Surly some materials science expert could and should have come up with a gasket material that would have lasted the life of the vehicle. This, is given the fact you need to pull the whole front sub-frame for remediation of the problem, should either have been designed to never fail or be easy to access and less expensive to repair.
I am now rethinking my whole future plans for vehicle updates. 35 years ago the sub-frame would be out of the vehicle and amateur grease monkey would have had the op gasket in the vehicle by now but age and health preclude this and all I can do is rant.
Rant over.

I think the gaskets actually are better than they used to be but synthetic oil is hard on them.

I don’t know. My Lexus v8 never had one leak. Sold it at like 120k miles. Never did any gaskets. Not sure what up with BMW. Still fun though. So I keep coming back.

On the airbag recalls, did they actually replace anything or did they just confirm that your airbags were fine?

'01: NFA I knew it before hand as it seems to only apply to the Ab in the Sports Style Steering Wheel.
'13: AB replaced along with a bolt.

I hear ya... we’re driving around in a new GMC Acadia while visiting Dallas and talking about spending enough time here soon to warrant buying some cars.

I said I’d buy a truck for myself and a 4.8is for my wife again and she flat out said no way.... her response was “at home you’ve got plenty of tools and can do it but here I’m not interested in the risk of breaking down”

At least you didn’t make the mistake of buying a ford or a dodge, OP. I’d say forego the oil pan gasket unless it starts weeping. $2,000 for preventative maintenance is a bit unrealistic IMO.

Regarding the airbags, this is standard protocol. Mine is going in next weekend because it has a recall on the passenger side front seat sensor. This sensor is to nodify the SRS system that there is infact a human on the passenger seat in the event of an accident. I really like my wife’s face, so I’d prefer the airbags deploy on her if something were to happen. This may seem like an nuisance now, but at least lawyers have scared these large companies into some kind of responsibility.

Agreed on the oil pan gasket - Replace it when it starts to dribble. Mine is weeping at the moment and got that same ~$2K quote from my indie to replace it. Still on the fence with getting it done

My oil pan gasket has been identified as a leaker for the past 190,000 miles and I still haven't spent the $2300 quoted repair in extra oil. Besides, you get into that and there's a lot of other stuff that can get screwed up.

Great input and food for thought. Lots more I could say but I'm trying to let this develop without steering it.
