2002 x5 3.0L petrol
My X5 has an occasional asthma attack!! Occasionally when driving there is a huge cloud of white smoke that comes out of the exhaust- resembles an atomic bomb! Poor cars behind are terrified... I have read various posts and I dont think it is coolant or oil, car not using either oil nor coolant. There are no codes present on the dash and the car stops smoking and runs clean again. The car is also heavy on fuel and lacks power. Could this be injectors? I kind of ruled this out as is only happens occasionally. If it is a vacuum leak the car should use oil due to a faulty cvv valve - the 'smoke' is white but there is no burning oil smell. No fuel smell from the sump. I am no scientist so any ideas before I send the car to a clever person !! Last edited by Rob Faure; 08-27-2019 at 03:31 AM. Reason: trying to post full story |

What codes are you getting?
Do you have a decent reader like a Foxwell or ista-d, etc.? Is this happening now while it's cold only or throughout the year? Sent from my SM-A730F using Tapatalk

No codes and I don't have a reader, it doesn't have a preference whether it's hot or cold !!

If you don't have a reader how do you know you don't have any codes? Do you have any friends with a code reader? I mean something like the Foxwell and not just Torque Pro (which I love but it doesn't go deep enough in the system)

Agree with eodguy, foxwell (or other equally capable reader) is required for ownership of these trucks. The factory (BMW) specific codes won't always throw a CEL and can be very helpful with diagnosis. Foxwell can be had for ~$140 here in the States, hope it's similar in South Africa for you.

A stuck injector will cause a Yuuuge cloud of white smoke, so that's definitely a possibility. The injectors on these vehicles are known to leak, though not like you're describing. As suggested, you need to be able to read the BMW codes. I would think you would be getting misfire codes on the cylinder with the faulty injector (if that's the issue).

You need a good scanner. I have the foxwell 510, I think the 520 superseded it and is functionally almost identical (though for no good reason they eliminated the reset button so you have to unplug if you get stuck)

sounds like a CCV failure. Your oil consumption up? A lot? The blast of smoke is intermittent and no correlation to anything else? That's a CCV problem. Won't show up in a scan. Most likely problem is the flow back tube from the CCV to the dipstick tube. The collected oil in the CCV is supposed to flow back to the dipstick tube and back to the crank case. When the flow back tube collapses, the oil builds up in the CCV and then gets sucked into the intake resulting in the unpredictable clouds of smoke. Replace your CCV system with a cold weather version and I predict your problem will be gone.
