N62 valve guide seal failure (poll)
I'd like to inquire:
How many miles on your N62 engine? Have the valve guide seals bean replaced? If yes, what was the mileage at time of replacement? Very interested to know how many N62 engines have made it to old age without replacing the valve guide seals. Thx! Last edited by mfiver; 09-04-2017 at 05:24 PM. |

Update:
I went ahead and did the seals later in 2017 when I was doing other gaskets. That would have been after the NorthEast summer road trip that year which was about 5k miles. I could look it up, but I would guess that I had about 115k when I elected to do the seals before there was a problem. I'm at 136k now. No problems. These things love to be maintained.

136k on my 04. No smoke with everyday driving, but will smoke some if idling 10 min or more. Im not worried about it until A. It gets to the point where it smokes on regular drives or B. I find a good indy in N.Jersey who has AGA tool and is priced accordingly, considering the time saved using the tool.

105K total miles. 2004 4.4 engine.
I bought it at 85K knowing I would need to do this. Talked seller down 2500 dollars. It would puff smoke if extended idle. Engine did not burn any oil. Indy did mine a few thousand ago. No smoke, runs great. Old seals were hard and not sealing.

109K miles no seal replacement.... smokes like a freight train if I park it more than 3 days.... burns 1 quart of oil every 200 miles if I travel at 90+mph.....got pulled over for a smoke show after it was parked for 2 weeks and gunned it going up an onramp about 3-5 minutes from my house... it passed inspection about 2 weeks before that so I told him I must have gotten some bad fuel... lol
