Retainer for manual transmission shifter bearing?

Is there some sort of retainer for the plastic shifter bushing/bearing (#6 in diagram attached)?

When attempting to remove my shift knob (that is apparently glued onto the shifter by the PO), I can now lift up the shifter such that the bearing could become almost completely unseated when driving.

Seems odd there's not some type of circlip or something. What am I missing here??
