4.6is Engine Out Service
I've been thinking about how much work and how hard it would be to do an engine out service. Mine is running fine, but at 110,000 miles, it has an oil leak that requires a quart of oil refill every couple months, it has a slight coolant leak after I replaced the alternator, and i like to replace the engine mount and the steering u-joint while i have the engine out. Plus i want to refinish the cam covers, replace the timing chain and guide, replace the water pump, maybe the radiator, the a/c compressor, belt tensioner, and replace and reseal all the gaskets to stop the nagging oil leak. If anyone's done the engine out service please post a link so I can learn from the masters! Thanks very much! Theo

I helped with three M62 overhauls. One of the helpers that's done it before says it adds 6 hours. Valve seals would be more improvement engine out vs chain guides which I didn't find difficult engine in. The most difficult part is probably just getting the exhaust headers back on during reassembling. If you are doing chain guides you'll already have 90% of the hoses and wiring disconnected so it's not a big leap to pull the engine

I don't see any reason to remove the engine for what you have described. If you pull the radiator and water pump you can stand directly in front of the motor which saves some back bending.
Most common oil leaks are the valve covers and upper timing case covers. But your leak sounds real bad and should be obvious... |

I had to do a transmission rebuild, and the timing chain. I also had a coolant leak from the rear gallery plate. For a little bit more, pulled the entire engine and transmission out. Sent the tranny out for service, inspected everything. Did not need to pull the heads or do bearings. Everything else done, did the Besian fix to the Vanos, new time chains and guides (they were brittle and easily broken using your fingers).
