How do I Know if I have an OBC?

I'm looking for a used X5 and want to be sure it has an On Board Computer (OBC). I'm planning on doing a virgin nav installation assuming I can't find one with the nav already and want the full functionality. What does the OBC look like and do?

Thanks in advance, Thom

obc i believe is standard its just a computer that controls/monitors everything on the car with an output of things like miles/gallon, avg speeds etc... you dont need navigation for that

It's part of the Premium Package. The easiest way to test to see if you have it is to push the stalk on the left of steering wheel and see if the display in the instrument cycles through.

I thought all BMWs came with OBCs.

BTW get an X5 w/ NAV, if you want NAV. Its a lot cheaper in the long run. Parts are expensive and a lot of time to install. Plus, you'll end up running to dealer to code software; too much hassle if you ask me. Some on this board have done it, but not sure if they'd do it again.

This is true, but you'll get 4 additional functions if you get the premium package. Just look for the OBC button on the standard CD radio for the upgraded OBC.

All-

Thanks for the great information. I'm over at the AudiWorld board with my allroad but will be adding an X5 to the stable shortly. By way of explanation, I need a manual transmission in a low mileage CPO of which there are 16 in the USA vs. 1381 with automatic (4 below 25,000 miles). Finding one with nav is the proverbial needle in a haystack. Hence I'll get a manual and add the nav since it is unlikely to find one with both. Fortunately just about everthing has the Premium Package with contains the high OBC as noted above so I'll wind up with full functionality.

If you can't find one with NAV, I would suggest just getting an aftermarket portable unit. Most are probably much better than the BMW unit. Besides, I wouldn't feel comfortable with having my entire interior stripped apart to do the retrofit...it just won't be the same when things are put back together. Just my $0.02
