does a 2001 need to have battery coded into the computer?
I've read a lot of posts talking about programming the computer when a battery change is made, but I don't know if it pertains to my older 2001 X5. If it does, does anyone know where to find the info on how to do that? I can't find it in a Bentley Manual.

Just an FYI...battery registration started with the new generation BMWs which started with the e90 3 series, e65/e66 7 series, e60 5 series, and e70/e71 X5/X6 models...and continued to roll out on new models there after.
The reason for the battery registration has to do with the IBS (intelligent battery sensor) that these new BMW models have. They communcate over the LIN bus..or the BSD bus (on the e90/e65/e66 built prior to the 2004 e60)...and your e53 X5 has neither of these communication busses nor an IBS. See the info below and know it to protect yourself against gouging by vendors (which even includes BMW employees that are noobs or wet behind the ears) that assume your old generation BMW will require battery registration...it DOES NOT. ![]() ![]()

thx, Q. One less worry, mate!
It thought I was doing pretty good all these years acting as the "intelligent battery sensor", but then again, I'm gettin' pretty old, and probably less intelligent, I just would like to deny that as long as I can. |

I don't think of the IBS as being that "intelligent". After all you have to program every detail into the gubbins in the first place. If it was any way intelligent it would work it all out for itself. I think the name gives it all away I...BS! Just another way for $tealers to reach into your pocket and relieve you of a healthy chunk of change without actually doing anything of great significance to improve your vehicle.

Agreed. So far, the only time she's been to the stealer is for the Takata recall of the driver side airbag that nobody before me bothered to get done. Whiule there, they did offer to replace my positive battery cable to the tune of over $1k. The learning curve to keep her out of the stealer is pretty intensive, though, I might add. It does seem that the extreme expense for repairs on all BMWs does drive the resale price down in most markets for us tinkerers, especially on the older models (like mine), so there is a silver lining in the end. Driving my X5 is like driving a giant super-tall go-kart. Freakin' awesome, as my Eagle Scout would say.

It is kinda BS too. I put a new battery in my E60 535 about 4 years ago and didn't register it. Everything has been fine. Dealer wanted over $600 to install and register a battery. And when I asked how much just to register a battery it was 2 hours labour at $125/hr.
Um, no.

I asked if I could just bring it for a quick registration, knowing full well how long it would take. They insisted they had to do a full "connect to the Fatherland" diagnostic as well as book it for over a week out. I told them where they could stuff their diagnostic.
