2002 4.6is considering rebuilding engine - florida

Engine needs rebuild (2 cylinders w/low compression - scoring in bore). 83K miles with many fixes over the last 2 years (rear air suspension, new alt..._ . Care is great except for engine. Seen some posts where they spend $14K (seems high) anyone else rebuild one of these? Cant find any used or rebuilds on the web. Looking for someone in So Florida to do the work. thx!

I rebuilt mine at home, the only special tools you will need are for the cam timing. I think mine cost about £3-4000, it was so expensive because I had to replace parts damaged by an inept Indy (i.e. camshaft and 2 con rods). While I was in there I changed rings, bearings, big end and cylinder head bolts, cam chains and guides, Vanaos units, one bank of tappets, and the oil pump. They are easy engines to work on.....once they are on the bench

well i feel fortunate - here are a couple snaps of my block after i cleaned it up in advance of reassembly and final cleaning / painting. Engine had 164k miles on it - and not a single issue with any cylinder. Compression test prior to disassembly had only small variation in #4 and number #8. No scratching at all. Only minimum carbon build up ...

The heads were completely rebuilt w/new bearings, lifters and value stem seals. No issue with the guides and valves. Seats were redone. Cams are in perfect condition and each head only required < .01 mm shave.

All new Vanos and timing gear components including distribution units. (Heard they can wear on the Vanos side). New cam chains and tensioners.

Oil pump in solid working order. No issues w/shrapnel pluging the screen. All new timing chains, adjusters, rails, solenoids etc ...

Re-doing the entire front drive-train (shafts, boots, main drive shaft etc ...)

Transmission was rebuilt a couple years ago - and runs like new.

Can't wait to get her back on the road to see what it must've felt like to drive it off the show-room floor ...

More than seven years later, I doubt it's still on his "to-do" list...
