welll, looks like the radiator cap was missing a little chip on the bottom, probably causing loss of pressure.

messy though

going to get the expansion tank replaced too just to be sure, for some reason half the float indicator was missing

Prior owners do all kinds of odd things to their cars, especially when it isn't special to them, just a way to get to work. I've replaced the stock head unit in both of my X5s and am super happy with their Android counterparts. I have the USB interface that lets my head unit talk to the car's electronics and duplicate many functions of the stock navigation. Might be something to look into if you're missing an ability to change a setting.

to be honest I haven't even scratched the surface of what is probably possible with that unit, I probably need it to connect to the internet to do some updates and install some useful apps. The digital radio is a bit hit and miss, I live in an area with poor radio reception but it's much more annoying with DAB+

Based on what I learned here I decided on a black 4.6IS from 2002 with 180k km on the clock. It was at a good price with a few things that need adressing:

- radio has no reception; there's an aftermarket antenna on the window so I'm guessing the previous owner has fiddled with this. I was thinking of upgrading to a modern android unit
- there's a squeek coming from the engine when revving, I expect the serpentine belt and tensioners need replacing
- at lower speeds there is a clicking noice from the front left wheel, I'll have the brakes and bearings inspected

Otherwise I'm very happy with this car, I figured life is too short for boring cars so wanted something with a big V8! I'll have it checked out by my mechanic soon and hope he doesn't find any skeletons in the closet haha!

Hope I can be a constructive member on here, nice to meet you all!
Have the CV joint inspected while you are doing the brakes?

Ahh cheers gets! That heater is not present in my car, I assume it is some sort of cold weather option?

CV boots and brake lines have been checked and found in good shape! Took the car today with an upgraded fan design. (heavier fan with a ring, different fan shroud with about an inch of clearance all around. Motor mounts haven bene inspected too, seem to be fine)

the car is making a wooshing noise when cold starting again for about a minute after which it quiets down, just like it did before the fan was replaced. Considering all new parts are installed I'm assuming this is normal :P

If your whooshing sound is only on cold starts, open the bonnet and listen to the auxiliary air pump for leaks or just being on its last legs.

ok, finally had some dry days here and I've been using the X5 regularly. the good bits are that it's no longer throwing out coolant from the expansion tank, starting is no issue because the battery is up to the task and the android unit is doing good except for a slightly dodgy DAB+ antenna... not the end of the world.

Now I visually checked the secondairy air system, it makes a wooshing noise for about a minute or until the revs go up. One connector does not stay clipped in but seems to seal ok. so not sure if this is something that needs action right now.

I do have a CEL, and after I connected pin 7 and 8 in my plug I did get a bit more functionality out of my odb reader, but the codes that are persistent are these:

P0011 camshaft position - timing over-advanced bank 1
P0155 O2 sensor heater circuit bank 2 sensor 1

Now I do notice a bit of resonance between 4-5k rpm, so I was thinking VANOS. Now in the last big service by the PO the timing chain and vanos have been done according to the receipt... not sure what the normal service is for the vanos? Could it be the actuator/solenoid that is malfunctioning? Causing a cam positioning error and subsequently also a rich/lean condition to set off the O2 sensor?

another thing that has popped up twice now, after some quick steering is a traction control warning where the traction control gives an error message and also the ABS light comes on. I don't see any fault codes for this. After this happens, the automatic gearbox doesn't want to shift up any more from 3 up and I need to shift manually. After turning the car off the message goes away and all is right in the world. Might be an iffy wheel sensor?
