Thanks for all the tips. Just to close this thread out, I flushed the system. No change. Based on one of the earlier comments I checked the universal joint on the steering column to the rack and pinion. It looked ok, but just to be sure, I drenched it in spray lube. Problem solved. Was it the universal or the refresh of the PS fluid, I am thinking the joint looked good but was somehow binding. Thanks for the tips to look at the column joint.

If that U-joint just raw aluminum it needs lubricant or like stainless it will actually pressure weld at a molecular level. Tricky when you do two fixes at once so you aren’t positive which was the cure

If you find out that the rack itself is bad PM. I have a spare steering rack that I no longer need since I don't own an X5 any more

The wife's 02 is not exactly light on the steering but I just assumed it was the BMW performance/road feel thing and fat tires being our first BMW.Anyways when it came time to buy tires I checked a tire chart and installed a narrower tire with the same circumference. It did lighten the steering enough to notice.

I notice the difference every time it rains. I ride on soft compound winter tires every day of the year and they are beastly to twist on dry ground.
Recently had to steer wife's X5 with the engine off. That was a hell of a workout.
