Exclamation Another Trifeca case...

Here is my story. I bought a 2001 X5 4.4. Got it for almost nothing as it had transmission issues. I swapped a transmission from a donor and that was solved. No shortage of donor parts, so I did all 4 corners for brakes as well. The ABS module was bad, so I swapped that out too. Did some other stuff and it this point it works great. Lots of power, shifts perfect.

Of course I have the trifecta of lights, and I understand that because I swapped out the ABS module, those lights will stay on. My issue right now is that the speedometer and odometer won’t work. I put new ABS wheel speed sensors on (not used, not eBay) but no change. I can drive it for days, weeks and it’s not showing any codes. I have an Autel scantool so I know that the ABS module is working, as I can do the ABS brake bleed, but I’m stumped on why the speedo isn’t working. I hooked up a Bluetooth OBD2 to my phone, and through a couple different apps, it will register temp, RPM but it also does not show speed.

What have I missed? What should my next steps be?

What's your actual voltage while running?

There was an issue on here before (can't remember who) and they had a similar situation and I believe it was voltage but a weird cause making the drop, not battery/alternator.

ASC or DSC? The module should be coded to your vehicle (and steering angle sensor aligned if with DSC). There should be codes on the module as clearly you are missing speed signal from rear left.

You have any codes for the cluster? Is the autel capable of pulling codes from all modules? Sorry not familiar with that scanner.

Edit:. If you do the cluster self test does the speedo sweep?

DSC. only code that has popped up was an O2 sensor. Yes that module should be coded to the car, but it’s not. I’ve enquired wit ha couple local shops, they can’t do it, as it’s VIN specific, BMW won’t do it, and I emailed a company you send away, they can’t either.

The scanner can read all modules, live data, ABS etc. There is no self test when I start up, and I’ve even swapped out for another cluster to see if that was the case.

It's one of the self tests in the hidden menu of the cluster. You'll have to unlock it and then run that test number. There's threads on it, sorry I don't remember the button combination or test number.

Edit: hopefully Andrew will pop in with how to do it. I swear he rolls around with his cluster unlocked monitoring the fuel tank levels on a constant basis.

Found the self test on YouTube. Cluster is fine.

Speedo and economy gauge tested fine, but they don’t work while driving.

bad ground will do it.

If your scanner can't read the abs module you won't be able to solve this problem. You said you get no codes but that’s impossible if you have trifecta your scanner must be missing something.

Can you read real-time wheel speeds and transmission input and output speeds? Any of those sensors not reading and you will have trifecta.

What color is BRAKE ? If RED, than it's a whole different ball game.

When you swapped the abs module was it the exact same model number? I've read that if not, it needs to be coded to the car.

Back to: need a scanner that can read the wheel speeds and transmission in/out. I use the foxwell NT510 and it's served me very well. Cant code much but can do some module programming.

Oh: the other biggies that will set trifecta: steering angle sensor and yaw sensor. Any of those will show up on the foxwell. Can you read the SAS with your scanner?
