Transmission adaptions reset

Reset the transmission adaptions using Inpa, because I had the annoying 2 - 1 jolt, since I got the car and I wanted to fix it.

But now the car is almost undrivable. Did 30 Kilometers since the reset, but somehow it doesnt seem to adapt or get better. Transmission shifts all over the place, almost stalling the engine or overreving it. Shifting takes forever and when it finally does, it throws you around in the seat because it happens so violent. When overtaking/kickdown it goes into transmission limp mode. Also sport mode is sh*t now, before it was quite nice and did not have the 2 - 1 jolt.

Is there a way to fix this?

Valve body solenoid replacement and new valve body seals along with a complete flush and filter change is about your best bet (not guaranteed)

Well off course a mechanical overhaul alongside fluid change would be good. But it should be possible to atleast get the previous state back, I mean the transmission can not be destroyed just because I reset some adaption parameters, right? I think it is not mechanically struggling to shift but simply gets some weird inputs by the control module

The things I mentioned are just minor fixes, kind of like changing the coolant tank and antifreeze as opposed to all hoses, heater core, thermostat, water pump and the radiator along with it.

PSA: Do not reset trans adaptations without doing any work. The EGS has learned to compensate for wear inside the transmission over a very, including the fluid over a very long time period. Resetting, without doing any work, sets it back to expecting... basically a new transmission baseline to start at.

Just my opinion. But you probably have to do some mechanical work now. Or, keep driving, and hope, the EGS is able to relearn to the point it was at before.

Before any recommendations though, what X5 and trans are we talking here?

Thank you. The shifting seems to slowly get better, but I was not expecting it to take such a long time to relearn the adaptions. I also tried doing a firmware update but it seemed to be already on the latest.

Its a 2004 3.0d, so its a ZF 6HP bmw part no. 7557063

Is 7558474 the latest ZUSB number for that part number? I got my SP Daten from some sketchy doogle drive folder so i do not know if its even closely up to date

That's probably the latest firmware. Those haven't been updated in a very long time if I had to guess. What version Daten files are they?

Yes, if you don't want to do any work to it, you'll have to just drive it and cross your fingers the EGS gets back to where it was. Were it my vehicle, I'd do a fluid/filter change, the tube seals, bridge seal, and mechatronic sleeve. I'd use Valvoline Maxlife ATF (synthetic) multi-vehicle fluid as it is thicker than the OE ZF fluid and just about anything else I've tried (Liqui Moly, Pentosin, Redline). It helps to compensate for some of the mechanical wear in the solenoids, clutches, etc. I cured 2 different vehicles which exhibited the 2-1 slam with the above combo.

Not sure about your part of the world, but here, all in was ~$450 in parts IIRC. Those 2 ZF trans shifted like new vehicles afterwards. Both were ZF 6HPs.

Have you tried the ZF suggested drive procedure after adaptations reset?

If you go to route of changing oil it's worth to change new solenoids and seals between mechatronics and gearbox. New ZF solenoids are 300€ for a set. I just did mine and it's not difficult. Still too early to say what kind of effects this has done. (Not had time to do the proper drive procedure and not enough miles.)

Clavurion: Have you tried the ZF suggested drive procedure after adaptations reset?

I didn't see how to do this on a public road... maybe you have a highway that has little to no traffic on it?

My strategy was to keep the revs under 2k rpm for the break-in period. Now I'm enjoying ~19 mpg (US gallons) instead of under 16, lol

It took about three weeks of mixed driving, about 300 miles, to learn the new adaptions. Now it's shifting great and the problem I was having, revving high with no gear engagement on an uphill, was solved immediately.

crystalworks: I'd use Valvoline Maxlife ATF (synthetic) multi-vehicle fluid as it is...

I agree. I replaced a leaking mechantronic sleeve four years ago with three flushes of MaxLife. No problems until the seals and the solenoids started giving trouble. I used MaxLife again. Added more than 8 liters this time, since dropping the valve body means more ATF will drain.

I've done it once. It can be quite difficult on a public road. Nearby there is old highway beside new motorway which is very calm on a summer night. I have to say the change it made was quite small and still needed normal driving to make it behave properly.
