Classic low voltage issue. Check your voltage using a decent scanner or the hidden test functions on your cluster. My guess you are in the low 12 volt range at idle when you start it triggering the trans fail safe mode.

It needed the computer reset for the fault codes after installing the new MAF! Had a local individual who is a retired BMW technician reprogram it for $50!

So the local guy had to reset your fault codes and did it for $50 dollars? I hope you know that for a little over a 120 dollars you can and must have your own scanner that will pretty much tell you everything and reset your codes... Buddy is only half a hyphenated word. By the way the e53 won't need a new battery "coded" at all (ever) when installed so don't let anyone tell you that you need that 200+ dollar deal at the stealership or their special lower price. Thank you for your response! I have a scanner but it will not reset all the codes! My friend had a BMW computer program the same as the Dealer and it was worth the $50 to finally fix this X5! This is my 5th BMW and my second x5! My scanner was able to solve all my other BMW vehicles problems; But. This X5 has been a challenge and would show no codes - yet there were several.

What scanner do you have?
The Foxwell is your best bet although most people have ista-d, etc. but the cable has to be soldered to work properly. Also the fastest way to check your MAF is to tap the sensor area of the MAF while running and if the engine stumbles then it's bad but maybe can be cleaned. Sent from my SM-A730F using Tapatalk

I was asked what OBDIi I have! It is a CAN OBDII/EOBDII U480
I bought this several years ago from Amazon and have used it on a former 2001 XR, a 2004 323ci and a 525i with no problems! When I am looking a buying a BMW to fix up I take it with me and run the codes! I also used it on several American cars and a MB 320ML! This Current 2004 X5 has given me problems with having fault codes but showing no codes! |

That scanner will likely only show generic OBD-II codes and none of the thousands of BMW specific codes... If you are seriously about maintaining your own BMW you need a BMW specific scanner...
