Clunk and Squeak

Hi All

I have 2 issues that are driving me insane and hope someone can help.

First is a strange squeak that appears to be come from the rear propshaft. If I hold the car on the brake and select Revers then Drive I get a strange squeak that I can feel in the propshaft. Doesn't appear to be much play in the Transfer box and the Guibo and centre bearing seem fine. Any ideas before I burn it !!!!

Second is a clunk when steering at low speed. Checked all the bushes and stiffening plate bolts and all ok. Possibly could be the Strut top bearing but they are only 10000 miles old. Is there anything that could move on the rack mounts?

Cheers Rob

I had a customer that had a squeak squeak squeak when driving slow. It was the giubo. I just loosened and torqued the 6 bolts to spec.

Is the steering clunk loud enough to record? Does it happen when steering one way more than the other and does it happen at zero mph?

Does it happen when holding steering in one place and going in a circle? One way vs. the other?

@Bobbybilly---You should post year and model. Squeak from the driveshaft is usually a u-joint. Clunk that's hard to find could be the steering shaft u-joint assembly, that should show up when turning the steering a bit side to side when standing and engine off.

Hi

The Squeak/Creaking sound appears to come from the Transfer Box. Could the Front Driveshaft splines cause this if they need greasing?

The steering clunk is only noticeable when manoeuvring at low speed. Seems to happen in both directions.

Cheers Rob

How are your sway bar links? They can “clunk” badly if loose….just went through this on my wife’s Grand Cherokee after changing them. My fault as I didn’t torque them with weight on the wheels.

I agree. The sway bar links clunk if loose. I chased one down on the front. I had to put it on ramps at just the right height/angle to find it loose.
