Usually means the FSU (blower controller) failed but can be the motor itself. Start with replace the FSU.

FSU are weird. wife's car was running blower for ten minutes then shut off. I swapped with mine and hers worked fine in my car and mine acted the same in her car (suggests over current in blower) then I realized I didn't put the hedge hog back in the air stream so of course was over heating.

Put my FSU in her car in the air stream and now both cars are working as designed.

- I think you should start by trouble-shooting first.

- I wrote a detail DIY FSR Trouble-shooting for E39 1998 528i, it is virtually identical for E53 X5. Please see the link...

https://www.bimmerfest.com/forums/sh...d.php?t=716322

--- You can easily by-pass the FSR with:
- Jumper in #1 and #4: completing the ground circuit
- Another jumper in #2 and #5, feeding the blower with full 12V, it will run at max speed. If this procedure does not cause the blower to run, then your blower is dead. The Blower Motor is a PITA job in the E39, E53...

Just remember to remove the jumper wires when you stop.
