You can fix a tear in intake boot with super glue. I cut my old one into three pieces to remove (factory installs screw on the bottom). Afterwards I discovered the Chinesium copy had fake bellows. They only were ribs on the outside. The inside was smooth. So it kinked when bent. Morons.

Anyhow until the BMW branded one came I glued the old one back together worked fine for a week and I highly recommend cut the old one in half to access factory screws.

Really dark

Finally got around to cleaning the ICV. Wow, must have been at least 50K Miles since last clean up. Maybe more, it was a dark hole, barely moved around. Cleaned up good. Seems to be running fine. Won't know for a few days as I am riding the motorcycle to work and giving the X a rest.
Checked front n rear fuses, all perfect, so not sure why I can't get the key fob to work anymore. It starts up the X fine, but won't take programming.
Important note: It stopped working about the same time the window failure occurred, I was guessing I might have blown a fuse when the window jammed. But nawh. Hope it's not the stupid battery key fob issue.
Oh well, it's still running fine though.
Stay safe everyone.

Without the central lock working properly and being in sync I never remember if the doors must be locked or unlocked, you can't Program the key.

You can test where they sell batteries if your fob is sending a signal is common for the buttons to fail

Cleaned it up, and it was dirty. Runs smoother now. BUT, SES popped up again, got the P1092/Pre cat fuel trim to lean bank 2:.
I have other readings from live data, but don't know what they all mean. Trying to shrink file size so I can post them. No tears in any boots. Overall not bad for this old X.

I get occasional fuel trim error. I think it's MAF just haven't pulled the trigger on replacing. Its possible a leak at sap connector. My mechanic buddy thought he heard exhaust leak.

If i reset fuel adaptation vs just reset SES I get a few months usually before trim error comes back and the fuel trims themselves are normal (5% or less typically) however often my long terms and short term are opposite sign which I've read is a symptom of MAF wrong value.

Oh: I've been wanting to tweak my air:fuel mix a little closer to power vs polute less and I think I came up with a stupid simple way to do it feeding the output of the pre cat sensors though a voltage bridge to send a ratio of actual volts to the DME.

Andrew, wow, you're way beyond my comprehension. How do you reset fuel ?
You must have a computer software package. I do have the live data , just having trouble uploading the images, stay tuned. It maybe the MAF. This one is over 10 years old and at least 100K on it.
It's just about done, at 20 years n 260K miles I can't see spending more money on it. Oddly, it doesn't burn oil and the trans is fine. I do need a right front wheel bearing though. Maybe brakes soon. etc.

I use foxwell scanner but there is a new scanner that's even cheaper now available on Amazon about $130.

A bmw level scanner is a requirement for self maintenance on an e53. There is only so much luck + guess will help you before you need a real tool.

Numerous repairs won't take without computer adjustment so a two-way scanner is needed for many repairs.

I'm about to do two front left bearings. Hoping one today one tomorrow. It's not a difficult job with the right tools. I leaned the hard way though that the usual bearing press tool is not nearly strong enough to push out the old bearing but with a high impact torque wrench and 1" bolt it's a non issue.

@bmwtvboy You could try switching banks on the post cat sensors, they are under the top engine cover and easy to get to, don't make a neat job of it because you'll be changing em back. If light goes out after a while you probably have depleted cats. The cat cleaner in a can can work but only lasted a short time for me.
