X5 2002 5L40E Transmission Diagram
Your inline 6 engine is designed to last 300k miles but your transmission is designed for 80 to 130k. Unfortunately BMW should have used a Mercedes Benz 722.X Transmissions which is far more reliable. The BMW Dealers are diabolical. They tell you that your Transmission is Lifetime and does not need maintenance. They tell you the fluids never needs changing. They want your car to break so that they can charge you $7,000 for a Re-manufactured or Rebuild transmission or buy a new car. The only thing you have to know... The Transmission fluids must be changed every 60k and can be done at some, but not all Jiffy Lube station. It's Common Sense that metal friction moving parts and high heat needs lubrication just like engine oil. There is a Ginormous difference between Re-manufactured vs Rebuild transmission. Don't be fooled. Always GO Re-manufactured. There are half a dozen Big Transmission Re-manufactured shops scattered throughout USA. Your X5 transmission has an extra Transfer Case used for the AWD (front wheel) These shops below do not warranty or fix the Transfer Case. https://www.certifiedtransmission.com/ https://etereman.com/ https://streetsmarttransmission.com/ Despite the claims of 3 year/100,000 miles warranty advertised on their website... These Shops do NOT provide any warranty DIRECTLY to the END Customer. They only provide to the local Distributor and you can not file a Claim with these MFG above. Your warranty is with the installer... NOT the MFG. The World is moving away from Manual Transmission/Clutch so everybody should learn to fix an Auto Transmission. Here some videos https://youtu.be/59xXMFTVgzo https://youtu.be/oJgT-1l0xIo Unfortunately some are stuck with GM. However, some e53 models have ZF Transmission. In this case, you're in luck. You can buy a ZF transmission from ZF MFG and Genuine OE/OEM parts from ZF. The ZF 5HP 24 is a very common transmission found in many cars.
This Transmission is found in X5 (e53) 4.4 & 4.6

I own a transmission shop. I rebuild transmissions.
I see plenty of ZF transmissions that need rebuilds, along with GM, Ford, Mercedes, etc. The only thing I agree with in your post is that all transmissions (and transfer cases, differentials, etc.) need servicing and fluid changing. We recommend 30k mile intervals for transmission, 50k miles for transfer cases/diffs. To the best of my knowledge, Mercedes does not OEM transmissions for other brands, so saying BMW should have used a Mercedes transmission makes no sense. And, by the way, the words "rebuild" and "reman" are thrown around so loosely that they are pretty much interchangeable at this point. Lastly, some of those large "reman" companies are much better than others, both in terms of upgrades/updates and warranty support. |

I'd have to disagree a bit with pinkmagic.
2002 X5 3.0 388,000 miles - No internal engine service ever performed, no cam lobe or timing chain wear measured at 242,000 miles, still on original VANOS. GM 5L40E transmission with original fluid. Regularly tows and and hauls big poodles and odd shaped 250 pound things on the roof. |

Yours still looks fantastic Steve! I can only hope mine makes it that far at close to 400,000 miles. You have set the bar for everyone here.

[QUOTE=pinkmagicgirl;1198272]Based on the mileage of your car...
I don't think Kelly Blue Book can make you an offer for more than $500. QUOTE] I look at it this way: Four rust-free, ding-free doors; rust-free, ding-free tailgate and rear hatch; two rust-free, ding-free front fenders; and a factory tow hitch and wiring harness. $2000 and you can drive this totally rust-free collection of very usable parts home! (Even the bumper covers part out at $200 each) |
