I forgot to come back and post my resolution, so I'll do that now. I got the shaft and my mechanics balked at the idea of removing the TC to get the shaft in, so we removed some of it and got it balanced. I'm happy to report it engages well and seems to have fixed the problem.

When I had my E53 4.4 I replaced the driveshaft with the longer splines. Put some grease in there after getting most of the rust off the Xfer case front output. Mine weren't stripped but almost. I pulled my Xfer case about 3/4 to 1 inch keeping the mounting nuts screwed on about half the nut threads. Since your down there look at your Giubo Joint/flex disc. BMW only, I put in a cheapy in and a few months later it was ripped.
