Relocation of air suspension air pump (lpg install)
I have a 2002 X5 4.4 Sport with a lpg conversion and a massive 90l tank in the boot. I am looking to gain my boot space back and install a smaller tank in the spare tyre wheel well. Has anyone re-located the air suspension air pump and could give me some advice please? Thx |

Nice on the conversion, but why not use the GIANT space currently occupied by the empty plastic fuel tank under the car?

I am running dual fuel, so it is not empty.

Wow even better conversion nice again.
The air pump is not very big and the tire is huge. Does your car have a sub woofer I would bet there is room for it in that compartment. The air hoses are just simple things. They have fancy ends so I would extend length in the middle with appropriately rated fittings. It's about 12bar pressure if memory serves. I would make the added length the same for both sides even though one side will be closer to make sure both sides have similar reactions to pressure requests. An easier fix would be to swap the space: put your lpg tank in the tire space and bring the pressure pump up into the boot it's barely bigger than a gallon of milk you could even keep the little army helmet dome to bolt it to the floor. I suspect the hoses may be long enough to do that without modifying

I have an 85 litre tank in the spare wheel well and there is room to put the pump in front of the tank (standing up) the pump that is, been in there over 10 years without issue. Just wrapped in some sponge and cable tied to stop it rattling. Floor fits in fine. I run tyreweld in the tyres and also carry a tyre plug tool and tiny tyre inflator that plugs in cigarette socket as added "get me home" insurance.

I am using runonflat tires and they have saved the day twice, though one of those times I was driving 70 and the tire donated its life to the cause so I did need to use my spare to get home.

Thanks for your input all.
Have measured up and a 85l appears to fit. Will be ordering and installing end on February. Will try to post pics after install and have also gone the run flat route. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk |

Keep plugs and pump as well. I've had to plug my run on flat a few times to keep them aired up after screw intrusion.
