Probably a repeat Bluetooth question, but I couldn't find an answer.

2004 E53 4.4, build date 4/2004. Steering wheel has phone controls, as does the radio/CD player. No nav. When I opened the left rear compartment where the nav DVD player and the CD changer would be (if I had them), I found what I believe is the Bluetooth adapter (pictured below). I cannot get either of my phones to find a BT adapter when I try the BT pairing procedure given in other threads. Is this, in fact, a BT module, and am I doing something wrong trying to get it paired? Is the build date on the module 12/2004, and if so, could this be a retrofit? My understanding is that X5's built before late 2004 did NOT have BT compatibility, but if that's the case, what's the module shown below? (sorry about the picture size!)

The module is there but is the antenna connected? :-)

And is it connected to power? If I remember correctly when I removed mine there were three cables plugged into it. If everything is plugged in, check the fuse that serves it. Some people pull the fuse as these have been known to cause parasitic power draws. That's why I got rid of mine, and I wasn't using it.

Mine is the same month/year build. Modules in the 2004 model were not Bluetooth enabled until late 2004. That module was probably for BMW Assist. I just swapped mine out for a early 2006 module.

Is there anything else I would need to do to enable BT other than find a later model module? Is it plug and play?

I'm seeing them on eBay for $30....is it really that easy and cheap?

Yes sir. You might want to erase the existing BT pairings in the replacement TCU.
