Aftermarket headunit steering wheel controls

I have bought an Eonon headunit and can't get the steering wheel controls to work. It is supposed to be plug and play, has a connector and small box which is supposed to sort out canbus, but there are 2 other wires labelled "steering wheel control 1 & 2". Anyone know what these should be connected to.

I made the mistake of buying this unit from an ebay dealer and not direct from Eonon, and the seller is not responding to my queries.

I am assuming that the steering control wires must be somewhere behind the radio. I have searched high and dry on forums and google, but no answers.

Anyone had a similar problem? Vehicle is update 3.0 diesel (2004)

My experience with the Eonon unit designed for an E46 is that the only steering wheel buttons that will work are volume and the up down buttons and I think the "Talking Head" guy will cycle through the different head unit modes (Aux, SD Card, etc.)

Mine won't do anything and doing setup procedure as per Eonon instructions does nothing also (not recognised). I also have these 2 wires connected to nothing which say steering wheel 1 & 2 coming out the back of the unit.

I've installed this on my mate's X5 before.

All buttons work on the steering wheel including phone and mute.

I know there was a 2-pin connector which doesn't need to be connected and a

yellow and white wires coming out of the steering wheel control box.

Kindly post a pics....it's been awhile and couldn't remember the colors so I can

assist you somehow.

Thanks for the reply.

I'll have a proper look early next week as I will be on holidays. Where is the steering wheel control box? Is it in the steering column somewhere? So far I have had nothing apart except the area behind the radio. The car had an Alpine aftermarket double din in it when I bought it and the steering controls worked fine on that (so maybe there are wires already behind the head unit from the steering wheel control box which I can use). If I know where the steering wheel control box is I can trace back.

Hi Tom,

Check this out:

See item #3 in the top picture, I believe this is the controller box for steering wheel controls (CANBUS). Do you have this box connected in your system's wiring?

That would be all I could think of for steering wheel controls.

The complete EONON page for the E53 unit is at:

Thanks Mike,
I have those same pics. I have item 3 (the canbus controller/adapter) but steering wheel controls don't respond. I did finally get a reply from the seller wanting me to take some pictures from the rear of the unit in case the canbus adapter is the wrong one. (I'm still curious as to why there are 2 wires hanging out the back for steering wheel control - items 5 & 6 on the top pic). I'll take the pics today and send back to seller and see if I get an answer.

Hi Tom,

I know it was some time ago, but did you get this resolved?
I've purchased an android unit and everything works perfectly, other than the steering wheel controls.

I'm in the same boat - no DSP or factory NAV. The head unit came with the CANBUS decoder (e46/e39 - which I believe is the correct one).

I'm wondering if there's something I have to wire up in addition?
I also have those unused "key 1", 'Key 2" wires.

Thanks!

I think the only viable solution is to send it back if the canbus box isn’t working.
I tried absolutely everything and couldn’t get it to work.
