Lazy man’s question

Disconnected the battery, shut the rear hatch.
Is there a way short of climbing through the back seat to reconnect the battery to get the hatch open?
03’ e53.
Thanks.

you could try jumpering a spare battery (or in another car) to the engine bay jump port, then the car would be alive enough to open the hatch as normal. Trying a charger instead of an actual second battery may not work, and may be risky.

Short of that, you can crawl through to the back, and there is a hatch release to pull. In your owner's manual, and findable on here via search. Not fun or easy, but definitely easier than it would be to crawl through to reattach the battery, assuming the panel is still in place.

Good luck.

If the floor is in but you can get to the back through the seats it will be easiest to use the manual release.

Second easiest use the jump point to get power to the car as long as the positive terminal is not grounded (very bad things).

Third easiest: backfeed power though cig lighter if yours is always on like mine

Forth, backfeed power though the trailer power port.

So there are options.

Unless you have too much stuff in the back seat to get through or the floor is up and in the way just use the manual release cable to open. There are separate manual release for the hatch and tailgate.

The hatch I think you can do without tools the tailgate needs a screwdriver.

Where is the manual tailgate release? Since my GMIII module is out, temporarily, I have a string attached to the hatch release tab. Works great. Hope to get it fixed up again soon.

Look in the manual or search online.

On the hatch there is a plastic rectangle I think on the starboard side maybe 10" off center. It pulls off and has a cable attached to the latch.

On the tailgate, there is a cover over an access hole your reach ING with a screwdriver to push the release lever directly with a screwdriver
