Aux heater (webasto) questions

Hi
So on my 2005 3.0d i have the webasto with a T90 remote.
Works fine to heat the interior in cold weather, nice to not freeze your ass sitting on icy leather.
However it doesn't heat the engine (coolant).. could it be because my thermostat is broken (open, struggles to reach good engine temp, replacement incoming)?

- I saw there is a mod to do for bypassing some valve and have it heating the engine also, anyone have some more info about?

- What is your remote operating range? Mine is very weak even with new batteries. On open field maybe around 100m...

- What does it runs on? There is an exhaust pipe but the heater doesn't seem connected to any fuel hose. If electricity, doesn't seem to pump a lot from the battery for the delivered heat. Unicorn farts then?

My 30d Webasto heater heats the cabin via heating the engine coolant - so I've always assumed the engine is also being heated (somewhat). Seems to be so...

A failed aux water pump would certainly cause heat distribution issues - if the system still ran at all.

I doubt a failing thermostat has any part to play in this - it's closed until over 80DegC. and the Webasto would not likely ever get the coolant temp anywhere near this temp.

The Webasto runs off your diesel fuel (on the 30d) - it has it's own fuel pump and feed lines. It uses approx. 0.5l per hour.

You can see the grey fuel line at the rear of the Websato in this image...

Oh, and the T90 remote range? 100m is a LONG way on a remote fob like this!!

My eBay copy is only good for 10-15m.

Does it have the pre-heating option (536) from the factory or is the remote added later / option coded afterwards?

I see so it's a mini diesel engine then!

Will check the aux water pump, but i'm pretty sure it works fine as i feel the liquid moving in the small hoses when the thing is ON. Need to have a closer look at diagrams.

About the remote 100m is really optimistic, if something is in between that's it.. Car parked under the window, if i'm in the middle of living room it fails, need to go near the window to have a signal.

@Clavurion: i really have no idea, the previous owner told me some preheating system was included in the car, that's it.. haven't paid so much attention to it until now, bought it during summer heat

If you give the full VIN we can check the factory specs /additional equipment.

If pre-heating (536) was from the factory it will only warm up the interior. There is a change over valve (Nr. 12 in the diagram) behind the left front headlight which guides the return from heater core back to Webasto passing engine. This valve can be coded out if you want to pre-heat the engine too.

If the aux water pump wasn't working the Webasto would shut itself down in a few minutes because of overheat.

Can you activate the pre-heating also from MID or nav screen or only with the remote?

Where can i check the options i have with the VIN?
And if i want to change it, it's only by coding, not by part replacement?

I have the option on the nav, 2 timers and heat/vent checkbox, but haven't tried to activate it though there.

You can check your build details here: -

https://bimmer.work/

Not sure how you can disable the option, but I don't have the S536 (Parking Heater) option, I have no coolant diversion valve, my timer has the Vent option only (as no parking heater) - and the Webasto heats my engine when running stand-lone (via remote).

I'd guess that the S536 (Parking Heater) option allows for the Webasto to heat the cabin only... which kinda makes sense.

If the vehicle has factory parking heater (536) option that change over valve can be disabled by coding with for example NCS expert.

Thanks for the link, usefull one.
So i checked my VIN and i do have "536 Auxiliary Heating".
But isn't it a bit weird, if you have 536 it heats only the interior, otherwise it heats interior + engine (like for you wpoll)? Who would want to take this option to not have his engine warmed up?
