Transmission Confusion

So the transmission the the X is finally starting to go kaput after 185,000 miles of faithful service. I have a 4.4i, but will a 3.0i auto work in it? I know some of them used the GM 5L40E, but was that the manual or the auto?

3.0i use the GM 5 speed. I think all the V8s got 6 speeds. I wish mine had the 6 speed. The 4.11 gears and 5/speed work great at cruise RPMs (2600).

The M62s had 5 speeds. N62s/facelift cars had the 6 speed

Not even the ZF 6HP26 used in the LCI 4.4i AND on the LCI 3.0d (which is I6)?

I think the bell housing and TC on the ZF 6HP26 used in the 4.8iS is different (larger) though... not sure.

I should have said no Gasoline model. I have no knowledge of the diesel models prior to F15s

Just sayin'

Doesn't help the OP - given their location. OP didn't state year of 4.4i, so current transmission is also an unknown...

You right you right. . . I wish we had more diesels available stateside, from all manufacturers. Also if I had to pay the NZ fuel prices I would want highest efficiency possible too or has it gotten better in the last 5 years?

Petrol prices here recently spiked up to well over $10 per US/Gal - so yeah, I'm glad to be running a diesel (at about $6 US/Gal plus road tax) - and getting over 30mpg.

Getting off topic - sorry!

Looks like the pre-LCI 4.4i uses the A5S440Z transmission, while the LCI 4.4i uses the GA6HP26Z. I think the former has the EGS module in the car while the later has the EGS module in the transmission - so they are going to be difficult to interchange. There may be other factors also.
